Before you travel
Some overseas apps and websites, including Google and WhatsApp, may not work on mainland China networks. Roaming with your home mobile plan usually keeps them working.
Alipay and WeChat Pay are used almost everywhere and both accept many foreign cards. Setting one up before you fly makes taxis, cafés and shops much easier.
January in Shanghai
Expect cold, often damp winter evenings. Bring a coat or a wrap for arriving and leaving, especially over a qipao.
Carry your passport: hotels and many museums ask for it.
SHANGHAI
Things to do
A few of our favourite streets, galleries, bars and tables, for the days around the party.
Strolls & shopping
Plane trees, 1920s villas and small boutiques. Wear comfortable shoes.
Wukang Road & Anfu Road 武康路 · 安福路
The prettiest walk in the city. Start at the ship-shaped Wukang Mansion, wander north past the old villas, then turn onto Anfu Road for designer boutiques, bakeries and cafés.
Columbia Circle 上生·新所
A 1920s country club brought back to life, with its mosaic-tiled pool, gardens and a mix of design shops and cafés.
Changle Road 长乐路
Shanghai’s qipao street, between Shaanxi North Road and Maoming South Road. Ready-to-wear and made-to-measure; allow a week or more for embroidered pieces.
South Bund Fabric Market 南外滩轻纺面料市场
Hundreds of tailors under one roof at No. 399 Lujiabang Road, for suits, tang suits and qipao. Most pieces take several days, so go early in your trip.
Zhangyuan 张园
Restored shikumen lanes, the classic Shanghai stone-gate houses, now home to luxury flagships.
Yuyuan Road 愚园路
A century-old street of garden houses, small design shops and good coffee. Quieter than Anfu Road.
Xintiandi 新天地
Shikumen lanes turned shops, bars and restaurants. Easy for an evening stroll.
Tianzifang 田子坊
A maze of narrow lanes off Taikang Road, full of crafts, tea and souvenirs. Busy, but great fun.
Nanjing West Road 南京西路
The big names under one stretch, from Plaza 66 to Jing An Kerry Centre.

Jazz & cocktails
For a taste of the golden age before or after the party.
